Golden Willow Photography Studio

The photographer

Hello, I’m April.

I’m April Keller, a portrait photographer in Stillwater, Oklahoma, and a photography student who is still, happily, learning.

April Keller, the portrait photographer behind Golden Willow Photography Studio in Stillwater, Oklahoma

How this started

I grew up in Kansas, which means I grew up outside. Long horizons, big weather, and the kind of light that changes everything about a field between six and seven in the evening. I don’t think I understood that was going to matter to me until much later.

These days I’m a wife and a mom, and I’m working toward my bachelor’s degree in photography at Southern New Hampshire University. Currently a junior, currently with a lot of coursework open in one tab and a gallery to edit in another. Golden Willow grew out of that: photographing the people around me, then their friends, then people I had never met, until it turned into the thing I do.

Being a student while running a studio is not something I hide. It means I am shooting constantly, learning techniques that are actually current, and I have not settled into doing things one way because that is how I have always done them.

What a session is like

I shoot in natural light, on location, and almost always outdoors. Partly because that is where I am most comfortable, and partly because people relax outside in a way they never quite do in a studio with a backdrop behind them.

I also direct constantly. You will not be left standing in a field wondering what to do with your hands. I will tell you, and then I will keep talking until you have forgotten there is a camera pointed at you. That is usually where the photograph is.

Everything comes back to you fully edited, at full resolution, with a print release. No per-image pricing, no ordering appointment, no gallery you have to buy your way out of.
